Wow, what a week to be an ex-cellphone blogger. Not only does apple slash the price of the iPhone by $200, but Palm also killed the folio. Crazy freaking week.

A $399 iPhone makes the device really really attractive though, especially at 8gb. As soon as the software unlock starts spreading and I can plop my T-Mobile SIM in there, I’ll likely do it. Otherwise, I’ll have to contemplate the iPod Touch, although 160 GB in my pocket makes the iPod Classic pretty attractive too.

Decisions, decisions… too bad my wallet already made the biggest one of all for me: I’m not getting any new hardware this year, and probably not early next year either. Owch, the wedding, it hurts.

I’ve heard since grade school that I should start a task, focus on it, and finish it. While that may be sound advice for some, I’ve found that the prevelance and pervasiveness of the internet has allowed me to multi-task to my heart’s content, and typically with pretty good results.

Yesterday, I was working on a conceptual design for some motion graphics, something I do quite frequently on the weekend as it lets me create something creative and useful for me. I’ve noticed, however, whenever I get in a creative mode, I focus on that exclusively, sometimes obsessively, and the expense of other normal habits (like eating, for instance.) I’ve also noticed that when this happens, my body is more likely to go into a seizure. My solution? Multi-tasking! While talking to my girlfriend (fiance, whatever) on the phone, I kept working on my art, without the usual aura of almost breaking into a seizure. Likewise, while writing this blog post, I’m shaving, posting my car on craigslist, and otherwise having a good time. Sure it’s taken me a bit longer to write the post, but I think i’ve come to realize my brain is hard-wired for multi-tasking. I think I have to multi-task, or else my brain can’t handle it. That’s why video production is so alluring for me, since I have to do a bunch of things at once. I’m learning how to temper my problem with seizures, by A) listening to music and sometimes focusing on the music while I edit / work, and B) taking mandatory breaks every hour or two.

Do you find yourself multi-tasking? Is it good or bad in your view? I’m interested to hear what people think who aren’t necessarily going to break out into a seizure by concentrating too hard.

I’ve been working with Apple’s Motion for a few days now, and I’ve got to say: IT sucks. As an after effects user, I’ve been experimenting with motion, mainly because there’s a program that can automatically edit text objects to create a character generator like interface for motion graphics. Unfortunately, Motion doesn’t have the same amount of flexibility that After Effects does.

For example, you can’t copy and paste keyframes. Instead, I’ve been creating a ton of “behaviors,” for tasks that I do frequently (which makes a lot of sense, actually, so I don’t mind.) The problem comes when I try to move an object that has behaviors applied to it. Typically, I’d like the entire object to move with the behaviors, but instead of doing that, Motion only moves the layer or the behavior. I’m sure I’ll have to do some sort of multiple select to do both, but damn, it’s frustrating. Bad motion graphic software design, that’s for sure. They got all the bells and whistles down (CG titling, MIDI interface, easy expressions through behaviors) but as for the important parts (copy/paste keyframes, UI) they lose.

Today, I decided I was through with slowdown and crashing, and instead switched to new Safari and Opera as my two browsing platforms (instead of Firefox and Netscape.) Sorry guys, but your instability is too much for me.

Update: I found out that if I turn off all extensions, my life is significantly better, but as for now, Safari 3 is still fast, and Opera is stable and full-featured.
