What a week

Wow, what a week to be an ex-cellphone blogger.  Not only does apple slash the price of the iPhone by $200, but Palm also killed the folio. Crazy freaking week.

A $399 iPhone makes the device really really attractive though, especially at 8gb. As soon as the software unlock starts spreading and I can plop my T-Mobile SIM in there, I’ll likely do it. Otherwise, I’ll have to contemplate the iPod Touch, although 160 GB in my pocket makes the iPod Classic pretty attractive too.

Decisions, decisions… too bad my wallet already made the biggest one of all for me: I’m not getting any new hardware this year, and probably not early next year either. Owch, the wedding, it hurts.

multi-tasking

I’ve heard since grade school that I should start a task, focus on it, and finish it. While that may be sound advice for some, I’ve found that the prevelance and pervasiveness of the internet has allowed me to multi-task to my heart’s content, and typically with pretty good results.

Yesterday, I was working on a conceptual design for some motion graphics, something I do quite frequently on the weekend as it lets me create something creative and useful for me. I’ve noticed, however, whenever I get in a creative mode, I focus on that exclusively, sometimes obsessively, and the expense of other  normal habits (like eating, for instance.) I’ve also noticed that when this happens, my body is more likely to go into a seizure. My solution? Multi-tasking! While talking to my girlfriend (fiance, whatever) on the phone, I kept working on my art, without the usual aura of almost breaking into a seizure. Likewise, while writing this blog post, I’m shaving, posting my car on craigslist, and otherwise having a good time. Sure it’s taken me a bit longer to write the post, but I think i’ve come to realize my brain is hard-wired for multi-tasking. I think I have to multi-task, or else my brain can’t handle it. That’s why video production is so alluring for me, since I have to do a bunch of things at once. I’m learning how to temper my problem with seizures, by A) listening to music and sometimes focusing on the music while I edit / work, and B) taking mandatory breaks every hour or two.

Do you find yourself multi-tasking? Is it good or bad in your view? I’m interested to hear what people think who aren’t necessarily going to break out into a seizure by concentrating too hard.

Motion sucks.

I’ve been working with Apple’s Motion for a few days now, and I’ve got to say: IT sucks. As an after effects user, I’ve been experimenting with motion, mainly because there’s a program that can automatically edit text objects to create a character generator like interface for motion graphics. Unfortunately, Motion doesn’t have the same amount of flexibility that After Effects does.

For example, you can’t copy and paste keyframes. Instead, I’ve been creating a ton of “behaviors,” for tasks that I do frequently (which makes a lot of sense, actually, so I don’t mind.) The problem comes when I try to move an object that has behaviors applied to it. Typically, I’d like the entire object to move with the behaviors, but instead of doing that, Motion only moves the layer or the behavior. I’m sure I’ll have to do some sort of multiple select to do both, but damn, it’s frustrating. Bad motion graphic software design, that’s for sure. They got all the bells and whistles down (CG titling, MIDI interface, easy expressions through behaviors) but as for the important parts (copy/paste keyframes, UI) they lose.

Firefox (and variants) we’re through for a while

I’m on the mac, and I’ve had some horrible problems with firefox for about six months. Today, I decided I was through with slowdown and crashing, and instead switched to new Safari and Opera as my two browsing platforms (instead of Firefox and Netscape.) Sorry guys, but your instability is too much for me.

Update: I found out that if I turn off all extensions, my life is significantly better, but as for now, Safari 3 is still fast, and Opera is stable and full-featured.

iPhone day = Me on MSNBC tomorrow

So, everyone set your DVRs, I’m going to be on MSNBC on Saturday morning from 9AM to 11AM est talking iPhone.  It’ll be three segments about the device, so i’ll have it in their studios and we’ll be yuckin’ it up.

If you’re my friend, you’ll watch.

HDR Photo panorama coolness (from microsoft?!?!?)

Pretty cool lil’ vid, and shockingly it’s from microsoft.

Error 56 with Blackberry Google Talk

So just in case you’re trying to use GoogleTalk for BlackBerry and you’re getting error 56, it’s always related to a time issue. I had a problem because my network time and blackberry time weren’t synced, and when I synced the time it fixed everything.

Just giving everyone a heads up in case you’re running into a similar issue.

Slipping…

So I’m not depressed again, but I’ve been having a kind of rough three days. A few things kind of kicked off the crap. First, I started clenching my teeth real bad, and now my front tooth hurts kind of bad.

More importantly, second, James Kim & family are missing. I don’t know James Kim, I just know some friends of friends, but the whole story makes me sick to my stomach. For the uninitiated, James went to thanksgiving dinner in Seattle. He never returned to his San Francisco home or office. There’s a full scale search in progress, but no one knows where he or his family are. Remember last Saturday? There was all that snow in the northwest, making the roads kind of bad. Police have also confirmed that neither James, nor his wife, have used their cellphones or credit cards in a week. While I don’t want to think for the worst, I do. The whole scenario is horrid, and kicks me right back to June… but it also makes me realize that part of my family is still here, and just my brother is gone. Tragic? Of course. Both scenarios are horrid. I’m praying for his family, I’d encourage you to do the same.

Paying for hosting!

Wow everyone! Huge milestone today… as my site paid for it’s own hosting.

Lemme give you a minute for that to sink in. I’ve made a whopping $8 off of my site.

Yeah, that’s right. $8. That’s three different ad networks combined.

$8 per week, $40 per month! Not too shabby of a start! Now I’ve just got to make sure my site continues to rock.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, what are you waiting for?!

Changing the game

If I told you I was planning on changing the way we see indie video on the web, would you believe me?

Didn’t think so.

Looks like we’ll have to see how it goes, but I think by next June, you’ll look back at this blog post and either A) say “Randall was really thinking!” B) “What a smarmy butthole” or C) “He tried, but too bad he failed.”

Either way, I’m happy enough. I’m going to create a job I love on the side, and try to bring it to me full-time. Lots of dependent variables, but the one constant: I want my life to rule, so it’s going to. End of story. Let’s hope that a ruling life will include some extra cash on the side, but that’s not a primary motivator.

My new project goes into beta on Monday… I’ll tell you more then.
