I’ve been working with Apple’s Motion for a few days now, and I’ve got to say: IT sucks. As an after effects user, I’ve been experimenting with motion, mainly because there’s a program that can automatically edit text objects to create a character generator like interface for motion graphics. Unfortunately, Motion doesn’t have the same amount of flexibility that After Effects does.

For example, you can’t copy and paste keyframes. Instead, I’ve been creating a ton of “behaviors,” for tasks that I do frequently (which makes a lot of sense, actually, so I don’t mind.) The problem comes when I try to move an object that has behaviors applied to it. Typically, I’d like the entire object to move with the behaviors, but instead of doing that, Motion only moves the layer or the behavior. I’m sure I’ll have to do some sort of multiple select to do both, but damn, it’s frustrating. Bad motion graphic software design, that’s for sure. They got all the bells and whistles down (CG titling, MIDI interface, easy expressions through behaviors) but as for the important parts (copy/paste keyframes, UI) they lose.

So I’d love some input from other people in creative fields. Right now, I’m working on some motion graphics for DigitalCameraInfo.com, and with that, I think I’ve discovered my creative “flow.” I’ll likely use your input as part of an article for CamcorderInfo.com, so beware of leaving comments… but I totally encourage it.

My process, if I could describe it as that is this:

Find logo and like materials

Start working on project

Look around for new After Effects plugins for inspiration

Peruse through animation presets and start modifying

Continue working on project

Find music (usually the longest step in the process)

Continue on project

Browse people who are respected artists

Get more inspiration

Get project to alpha state

Go for revisions

Take revisions and move to beta

Show to everyone and their mother

take about 1% of that feedback

finalize

give to client

really finalize.

Am I off base here? What do you think, what is your step for creative expression?
