Biphasic sleeping sidenotes

So a while back we had Michael Breus on The 404, when I was still hosting, and he talked a bit about sleep cycles and the sort. He also gave us a copy of his book, which I ended up stealing, and Traci ended up reading. He’s a really smart dude, and you should listen to him on The 404 because they’re some of the most interesting episodes.

In his book, he mentioned sleep cycles are 90 minutes… which really started to make sense for me. I started sleeping 7.5 hours a night instead of 8, and I felt better rested. Now, I sleep about 3-ish hours a night, and it’s very similar.

This morning I was searching around for some polyphasic sleeping questions, and stumbled across this biphasic sleeping FAQ. Maybe for people who aren’t down with sleeping 3 hours a night (4-5 hours total) they should check out sleeping in a natural 90 minute rhythm, and try to time their sleep more naturally.

PS- I know Mike is reading this, and I’m guessing Jake T. is reading this, but does anyone else follow this crazy sleep schedule of mine? Most of my family thinks I’m crazy (and i’m sure my readers do too) but it’s really helped me out a lot, especially since I’m staying on Eastern time, despite being on the west coast. If you’re reading, I’d love to hear what you’ve got to say, supportive or otherwise, so sound off in the comments.

Yeah, I am reading. My only question is are there lots of other people doing this polyphasic sleep thing? Have there been any long term studies done? At some point a month from now are you going to end up in a coma? :)

No long term studies, but lots of people are doing polyphasic sleeping. Just do a google search and you’ll come across a bunch of blogs.

I’m here, too. And I think you’re nuts. :) But hell, you wouldn’t be the Randall we all know and love if you weren’t doin’ it your own way.
