KSL-TV… Shame on you.
I realize the temptation to be first at anything leads many people to less ethical behavior, but Utah’s “tv news leader” has hit a new low with its’ false advertising campaign during May sweeps.
KSL claims their news is now in HD, but nothing has changed for May. In fact, the only thing that has changed is KSL’s branding strategy. KSL has been broadcasting in widescreen 480i for years, and their recent claim of “HD” is little more than an ill-advised marketing ploy. Sure, they’re upscaling their broadcast to 1080i, but let me break it down like this…
IT ISN’T HD. IT SIMPLY ISN’T. NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Most people consider HD to be 720P or greater. That would require KSL to purchase all new cameras, editing systems, a new switcher, control room, monitor wall, some new studio cameras and more that falls under master control or engineering. They haven’t done ANY of that.
They are simply lying, and it irks me. I’ll be writing a letter to the editor, but anyone who can hear me at KSL: STOP LYING. YOU’RE NOT IN HD. It’s dishonest and unethical.

Are people still watching television news? I can’t stand waiting 30 minutes to get the sports highlights and tomorrow’s forecast. I don’t care who was killed in a car accident and who’s house burned down, unless it was someone I know and if it was I’m sure I’ll find out in some other way.

The NTSC and the FCC definitions of HD include 480i. While you may not like it or consider it true HD, it is in fact a HD signal. Compared to the other stations signals KSL looks much better so quit bitching.

Bill,
Is that Bill, as in Clinton?
“The NTSC and the FCC definitions of HD include 480i. While you may not like it or consider it true HD, it is in fact a HD signal.”
And, Bill Clinton didn’t have sexual relations with that woman, because some courts define sexual relations as sexual intercourse. However, oral sex and penatrative acts with a cigar don’t qualify under that definition.
Have fun with your technicalities.
